Crafting a Life of Creativity and Unique Expressions
Hello there! I'm Kyoka Akers, a creative soul originally from Bessemer, Alabama, and currently making my home in the vibrant city of Birmingham. Crafting has been woven into the fabric of my life from an early age. In the fourth grade, my momma introduced me to the world of crochet, igniting a passion that has never waned.
Guided by the hands of both my momma and my aunt, I've explored various crafts, from latch hook to cross-stitch. Despite earning a BA in mass communications from Miles College and working as a reporter for a stint, the allure of crafting always beckoned me back. With a firm belief in the power of uniqueness, I pour my creativity into every piece, making most, if not all, of my items one of a kind—whether in size, color, or design.
My artistic journey reached new heights when I decided to give crafting a real shot. The result? The Crown Jewels, a breathtaking crochet doll wall that graced the Birmingham Museum of Art and Tuskegee University, accompanied by a mesmerizing collage wall. Recognized by the Mayor's Office, I proudly represented Ensley in the 99 Voices initiative.
While crocheting remains my first love, I'm a versatile creator. I sew, teach crochet and sewing classes, and curate art workshops that I lovingly call art therapy. Step into my world of creative chaos, where each piece tells a unique story. Welcome to the joyous mayhem—I hope you enjoy the ride!

I was chosen by Mayor Randall Woodfin to be the Ensley representative for his 99 Voices initiative, because of my Crown Jewels Exhibit that was on display at the Birmingham Museum of Art and it was also on display at Tuskegee University.

Craft, Cocktails & Conversationwas a whole vibe for me. I almost wasn't able to make it that day but I went and it turned my whole mood around. The vibe was so welcoming and open. The women were so inviting and I had a great time creating my artwork. The instructor, Kyoka was awesome and a great host. She had everything we needed to make the event a success.

I thoroughly enjoyed Craft, Coke & Conversation that was prepared for our deaconess board at the Historical 16th. Street Baptist Church. Our board consisted of multiple age groups. It was definitely a hands on creative girls rock activity. We were engaged also with fun, talk, food and laughter. We created some beautiful collages! Thanks, to Kyoka for the experience.

I enjoyed Craft, Cocktails & Conversation. Kyoka was an awesome facilitator of engaging yet relevant conversations. The food an drinks were great and everyone was able to have a good time. With Kyoka's guidance, I was able to create something that illustrated who I am in multiple layers. I never did an art project like that before. I didn't think I would enjoy crafting, but I was proud of what I created; it's hanging on my wall now!
Craft, Cocktails & Conversation is something I would enjoy doing again. I plan to invite my "crew" the next time it is offered.

I really enjoy events where you can meet interesting individuals and have great out of the box conversations. Koko's Originals hosted, Craft, Cocktails & Conversation, and I had a great time. The different background of people made for great interactive conversation. The craft as very inspirational and intriguing, and it was fun to explore our inner mind and style on canvas. Overall I enjoyed myself and cant wait for the next event. Great job.
